PSYCHIATRY

At Base Health, our psychiatry services are designed around a commitment to engaging and collaborative care, complementing existing therapeutic services with a holistic focus on the whole person and their environment. We believe in the power of your story and aim to empower you as an integral team member in your mental health journey. Your voice matters, and we actively involve family members where needed and with your consent. The psychiatry team provides service for children, adolescents, young adults and adults. Especially, (but not exclusively) for the younger age group we work closely together with parents and carers and may at times mainly work with them, to help build skills to navigate their children’s mental health challenges. We take the time to gather all relevant information and appreciate input from all relevant stakeholders providing prior consent.

Access to psychiatric care continues to be challenging with high need and shortages across Australia. At the Base, we endeavour to challenge this bottle neck. We may suggest that the initial assessment and therapy is provided by allied mental health clinicians for those seeking psychiatric care & consultation. This way, a suitable clinician at the Base has already gained insight in your story and needs. The psychiatrist may then be consulted and when possible, join the session with the allied health clinician, counsellor or somatic and creative therapist. Collaborative care helps with short and effective communication lines and ensures a broad lens with which we approach the mental health problem presented. Our friendly admin team, supported by our clinical care coordinator can explain this process and help you find the best wrap around team.

Key Principles:

1.  Holistic and Whole-Person Focus:

Our approach considers the complete well-being of individuals, recognizing the interplay between mental health, physical health, and the environment.

2. Empowerment:

We empower you to take an active role in your mental health care, ensuring that your preferences and concerns are acknowledged and integrated into the treatment plan.

3. Collaboration and Consultation:

Collaboration with key stakeholders, including General Practitioners (GPs), is a cornerstone of our practice. We believe in (co-) reflective practices, regularly and thoughtfully reviewing the effectiveness of interventions.

4. Patient as a Team Member:

Your input is invaluable. We actively seek your collaboration in decision-making, acknowledging that mental health conditions are complex and multifactorial elements can be part of the aetiology.

5. Trauma and Attachment-Informed Care:

We provide safe, trauma-informed care, understanding the impact of past experiences on mental health. Attachment-informed approaches enhance the therapeutic relationship.

6. Diagnostic Clarification and Creative Solutions:

Whether you seek consultation, a second opinion, therapy, diagnostic clarification, or medication management, we explore creative and tailored solutions to meet your unique needs.

7. Duration and Frequency:

The duration and frequency of our services vary based on the reason for referral and the level of acuity. We tailor our approach to best address your specific circumstances.

8. Acute Care and Regular Reviews:

When needed, we promptly seek out more acute care options. Regular reviews ensure that the treatment plan remains effective and responsive to your evolving needs.

Our psychiatry services are rooted in a belief that mental health conditions are nuanced and require a comprehensive understanding. We value your trust and are committed to supporting you on your path to mental well-being. Whether you're seeking consultation, a second opinion, therapy, or medication management, Base Health is here to provide compassionate and effective care.
